Alumni Story: Teaa Allston-Bing, DBA, MBA
Dr. Teaa Allston-Bing of Fayetteville, Georgia, is a distinguished Strayer University alumna whose commitment to lifelong learning has helped shape an exceptional career in human resources and organizational leadership. A graduate of Strayer’s Human Resource Management program with degrees earned in 2011, 2013 and 2015, Teaa currently serves as Human Resources Director for the City of Peachtree City, Georgia. Beyond her professional accomplishments, she remains deeply connected to the Strayer community through service on the Atlanta Regional Advisory Board and Distinguished Alumni Council, as an adjunct faculty member, guest speaker, student and graduate mentor, and commencement speaker. Her dedication to supporting students at every stage of their journey reflects her passion for giving back and inspiring others to achieve their goals. What inspired you to pursue a degree at Strayer University?
I was inspired to pursue a degree at Strayer University because, early in my career, I was already performing human resources responsibilities without having a formal degree. At the time, I worked in the same building as a Strayer University campus and often walked past the university, knowing that earning a degree would open doors and validate the work I was already doing professionally. I realized that while I had the passion, experience and drive to succeed in human resources, I wanted to strengthen my knowledge, expand my opportunities and build greater credibility as a leader. Seeing Strayer every day became a constant reminder that education could help transform my career and provide the foundation to achieve my long-term goals. My son was seven years old when I started at Strayer. I had to be the example for him as a role model and as a reminder that achieving more is possible with hard work and determination.
What are the most significant skills you developed during your educational journey?
The skill I developed most significantly during my educational journey was resilience and perseverance, closely followed by my ability to think strategically and lead with confidence. Balancing full-time work, family responsibilities and my educational pursuits required tremendous discipline, time management and determination. There were many moments when the journey was challenging, but I learned how to remain focused on my goals, adapt to obstacles and keep moving forward despite setbacks. Academically, my education strengthened my critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, allowing me to analyze complex issues, make informed decisions and approach challenges from a strategic perspective. Professionally, these skills have helped me grow from an HR practitioner into a strategic leader, educator and trusted advisor.
How have you used the skills you gained from your program in your career?
I have used the skills gained from my program throughout my career in human resources and organizational leadership. My education strengthened my abilities in strategic thinking, problem-solving, communication and leadership, all of which I apply daily in leading a municipal human resources department. Beyond my role as an HR leader, the skills I developed through my program have also allowed me to serve as an adjunct professor, speaker and mentor, where I have the opportunity to educate and inspire others pursuing their own professional journeys. My education not only advanced my career opportunities but also gave me the confidence and credibility to lead, influence and make meaningful contributions to the organizations and communities I serve.
Which resources at Strayer, such as faculty, advisors or the enrollment teams, were most helpful to you during your program?
Several resources at Strayer were instrumental in my success, but the most impactful were the faculty, academic advisors, and enrollment team. The faculty challenged me to think critically, apply theory to real-world situations, and continuously strive for excellence. They were supportive, encouraging, and genuinely invested in my success, which made a tremendous difference throughout my educational journey. Even when I failed my statistics class, I had to take the class on campus versus online. My professor poured so much time and attention into my success of the class that I passed it the second time with an A. My academic advisors and enrollment team were equally important. They provided guidance, answered questions, and helped me navigate each stage of the process, making what could have been an overwhelming experience feel manageable and achievable. The campus staff was so friendly that I knew I made the right choice at Strayer. Most importantly, Strayer created an environment where I felt supported as a working professional balancing career, family and education. The encouragement and accessibility of the people at Strayer reminded me that I was never pursuing this journey alone, and their support played a significant role in helping me achieve my educational and professional goals.
What advice would you share with someone currently working toward their degree?
My advice to anyone currently working toward their degree is simple: don’t give up, even when the journey becomes difficult. Most importantly, remember your “why.” There were many times during my educational journey when I was already working in human resources and performing the work without the degree, but I knew earning my education would provide additional credibility, open new doors and position me to make an even greater impact. Every late night, every sacrifice and every challenge was worth it. Your degree is more than a piece of paper; it’s an investment in yourself, your future and the legacy you are creating. Stay focused, trust the process and never underestimate what you are capable of achieving.
In one word, how would you describe your Strayer experience?
