Alumni Story: Vincent Carter, DBA

Dr. Vincent Carter is a Strayer University alumnus based in Memphis, Tennessee, where he currently serves as an Operations Supervisor at FedEx Freight. A lifelong learner with an extensive academic journey, Dr. Carter earned multiple degrees from Strayer between 2014 and 2022, progressing from associate and bachelor’s-level studies through advanced graduate coursework. Reflecting on his journey, Dr. Carter shares, “My journey from associate through my masters degree is a testament that with determination, anything is possible. While working full-time, I stayed committed to my goals, and Strayer helped me turn vision into reality. My story is truly one of perseverance that it is never too late and that you can do anything if you put your mind to it.” In the Q&A below, Dr. Carter offers further insights into his perseverance and the impact higher education has had on his journey.

What inspired you to pursue a degree at Strayer University?

I was inspired to pursue my degree at Strayer University because I wanted to grow both personally and professionally. Working in logistics, I saw firsthand how education could open doors and sharpen my decision-making. Strayer gave me the flexibility to balance work, life, and school while continuing to build toward my long-term goals.

Which skill would you say you developed most significantly during your educational journey?

The most significant skill I developed was effective communication. I learned how to clearly express ideas, lead discussions, and present information in a way that drives understanding and results.

How have you used the skills you gained from your program in your career?

I use these skills daily in my role in logistics. Strong communication has helped me improve team coordination, reduce errors, and handle challenges more efficiently. It has also strengthened my leadership ability when working with teams, managers, and customers.

Which resources at Strayer, such as faculty, advisors or the enrollment teams, were most helpful to you during your program?

The faculty and academic advisors were extremely helpful. They provided guidance, encouragement, and real-world insight that made the learning experience practical and applicable to my career.

What advice would you share with someone currently working toward their degree?

Stay consistent and don’t give up. Life will happen, but if you stay focused and manage your time well, you can finish. Also, don’t be afraid to ask for help and use the resources available to you.
